Things to Do in the Smoky Mountains: Thanksgiving 2026 & New Year's Eve Guide

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and it's one of our favorite times in the mountains. Here are our top things to do in the Smoky Mountains Thanksgiving 2026 weekend, from turkey dinner to Winterfest lights. We've also mapped out the best ways to ring in 2027.

Thanksgiving Dinner: Cook In or Book Early

Plenty of families make the cabin the main event, so shop in Sevierville before you head up the mountain, since grocery stores get busy the day before Thanksgiving. If you'd rather eat out, Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant, Five Oaks Farm Kitchen, and Holston's Kitchen have all served Thanksgiving meals in recent years. Holiday menus and hours change every year, so call ahead and book early.

Black Friday at Tanger Outlets Sevierville

Tanger Outlets Sevierville is the big Black Friday draw in the area, and it's right in our backyard. The center has announced extended Black Friday hours in past years, so check tanger.com/sevierville for 2026 hours. Our tip: go mid-afternoon once the early rush fades, when you'll still find deals with shorter lines.

Winterfest Lights Across Three Towns

Smoky Mountain Winterfest turns Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg into one long light show, with millions of lights along a roughly 25-mile stretch. Everything is glowing well before Thanksgiving:

  • Gatlinburg Winter Magic: November 5, 2026 through February 15, 2027, with a self-guided trolley tour

  • Pigeon Forge: through January 31, 2027, including the Wonders of Light Walking Trail along the Riverwalk

  • Sevierville: November 6, 2026 through February 15, 2027

Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas

Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas runs November 6, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with more than 6 million lights, holiday shows, and weekend fireworks set to holiday music. This year also brings the new Peppermint Valley in Country Fair, alongside Snow in the Grove in Wildwood Grove. Holiday weekends book up, so check Dollywood's calendar for operating days and hours before you buy tickets.

Walk It Off in the National Park

Cades Cove Loop Road is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, and late November can be a great time to spot deer and turkeys in the fields. Thanksgiving weekend is also your last chance of the year to drive up to Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome). The park lists the 2026 Kuwohi Road season as April 1 through November 29, weather permitting.

National Park Passport tip: Thanksgiving weekend is your final shot at the Kuwohi stamp in 2026, since Kuwohi Road closes after November 29 and the visitor contact station closes with it. The Sugarlands, Oconaluftee, and Cades Cove visitor centers keep their stamps available all winter (closed Christmas Day).

New Year's Eve in the Smokies

Gatlinburg's New Year's Eve Ball Drop

Gatlinburg's free celebration happens at the base of the Gatlinburg Space Needle, and in 2025 it included a live concert, a drone show, the midnight ball drop, and a fireworks finale. The 2026 lineup hasn't been announced yet, so check the City of Gatlinburg's website in December. Arrive early: last year the Parkway and part of Airport Road closed starting at 10:30 p.m.

Midnight Fireworks at The Island

The Island in Pigeon Forge hosts a free concert and midnight fireworks on Thursday, December 31, 2026, with free admission and parking. The fireworks are synced to a live soundtrack on WIVK 107.7 FM, and the headliner will be announced later this year.

Where to Stay

Blue Sage Hideaway in Sevierville puts you close to Tanger Outlets and the Winterfest lights, with a quiet mountain retreat to come home to. Some of our favorite New Year's Eve stories come from guests who stayed in, counting down from the hot tub while fireworks echo from the valley below. Book direct at bluesage-smokies.com for the best holiday rate, and ask about our celebration packages for a New Year's proposal or anniversary.
